Early event for International Women’s Day
7 March 2024
International Women’s Day 2024 was celebrated early in Whyalla with LIBERTY Primary Metals Australia (LPMA) operations, LIBERTY Primary Steel (LPS) and SIMEC Mining Iron Ore, coming together for a combined event on Wednesday.
More than 80 people attended the sit-down lunch at the Westland Hotel that featured guest speakers and a discussion panel that covered off on many issues involving women in line with the March 8 International Women’s Day (IWD) theme of Inspire Inclusion.
LPS HR Manager, Susan Bromley said the organising committee was delighted with the attendance and thanked guest speakers Gavin Hobart (SIMEC Mining Executive General Manager Mining Growth and Transformation), Kellie Collins (LPMA Head of Health, Safety and Risk) and Jacqui Higgins (SIMEC Mining Executive General Manager).
The panel, facilitated by LPS Head of Integrated Planning Hayley Perkins, was also an outstanding success as Jacqui Higgins, Kellie Collins, Newsha OmidShafaat, Tuihana Kingi and Rieanna Trowbridge (pictured right) discussed the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while calling for accelerated gender parity and understanding of women’s inclusion.
Hayley Perkins said the first combined event for IWD was perfect timing considering the inclusion theme.
“It worked really well bringing LPS and SIMEC together in line with the International Women’s Day theme for this year,” Hayley said.
“We got to hear many varied, and inspiring, stories from people in other parts of the business.
“To hear from engineers, safety and members of the executive team was really engaging and something everyone appreciated in the spirit of inclusivity.”
The Whyalla event was one of many happening at LPMA sites in the countdown to International Women’s Day on Friday March 8 that will feature a key-note address Teams event for all GFG Alliance employees in Australia.
