Information stand and key note speech at Tactic event

30 August 2023

GFG Alliance’s Whyalla operations were once again on show for the resources and energy world to see at this year’s Tactic Conference and Trade Expo in Port Augusta.

A combined effort from LIBERTY Primary Steel and SIMEC Mining Iron Ore, the GFG Alliance presence at Tactic (formerly called Global Maintenance Upper Spencer Gulf) this year focussed on recruitment and the transformation to GREENIRON and GREENSTEEL.

Crew members from the Whyalla Workforce Development team were on hand for the GFG Alliance expo stand at the three-day event on August 15-17.

We were looking to build on last year’s interest from potential employees and we once again had a lot of enquiries about our operations

They were there to talk to prospective employees – especially trainees, apprentices and graduates – about career opportunities at the Whyalla operations while Executive General Manager Mining Growth and Transformation, Gavin Hobart gave a keynote speech to the conference on the GFG Alliance transformation strategy.

Head of Procurement and Sourcing, Ben Jamieson said the conference and expo had been another excellent opportunity to promote the Whyalla operations and apply a focus on recruitment and transformation.

“We had learnings last year with the number of potential trainees, apprentices and existing graduates who came to our stand and wanted to know more about opportunities in our businesses,” Ben said.

“So this year, the Workforce Development team came on board with a strong presence to promote everything that is good about working for LPS and SIMEC Mining in Whyalla now and into an exciting future.

“To complement our whole package at Tactic, that future was outlined brilliantly by Gavin Hobart to everyone at the conference including a large group of industry players and significant government figures.”

Ben said the interaction with those at the conference and expo had again been high this year from those looking to sell their wares to those interested in our operations from a partnership, contractor or employee angle.

“It is a worthwhile event as it gives us the opportunity to further paint the picture of what the transformation of our businesses to GREENIRON and GREENSTEEL looks like while putting us front and centre for complementing industries, companies and contractors who could play a role in our operations,” Ben said.

“We were looking to build on last year’s interest from potential employees and we once again had a lot of enquiries about our operations,” Rebecca said.

“We have a great story to tell and a fantastic future, so these events are a great chance for people to come by and discuss careers and the opportunities that exist in our operations.”

The 2023 Tactic Conference and Trade Expo was a sold-out event with special guests including the South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Energy and Mining, Tom Koutsantonis and Member for Giles Eddie Hughes. The annual event is designed to stimulate the exploration of business opportunities, development of business relationship and profit from doing business in resources and energy.
