Excitement building for SIMEC Mining-hosted event

4 August 2023

The City of Whyalla has come on board as a premium sponsor for the South Australian Mines Emergency Response Competition (SAMERC) in Whyalla on October 13-15 this year.

The Whyalla City Council support and sponsorship is a huge win for the SIMEC Mining-hosted competition, and an entirely logical one, with the competition to be held in and around the Whyalla CBD providing amazing entertainment along with an economic and social boost to the city.

SIMEC Mining Manager Health and Safety, Steve Player said the sponsorship was effectively a partnership between the City of Whyalla, SIMEC Mining and SAMERC as Whyalla gears up for a ground-breaking event.

This will be a unique event that will be a great experience for our community, so we are proud to partner in bringing it to Whyalla.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone

It is the first time the SAMERC has been held in a South Australian regional city or town. They are normally held at remote mine sites.

“We don’t often see this competition being conducted in and around city surrounds so we thank the City of Whyalla for coming on board as a premium sponsor,” Mr Player said.

“It makes perfect sense for the Council to be involved as a sponsor and a partner as we showcase these amazing response teams as they battle it out for honours at this year’s SAMERC.

“We look forward to working with the Council to make this one of the best and most spectacular events seen in South Australia … right here on our doorstep for everyone to come and watch.”

SITE VISIT: Luke Brammy (SAMERC Deputy Chairman), Steve Player (Manager Health & Safety SIMEC Mining) Mark Bishop (Superintendent Emergency Services SIMEC Mining) and Len Batley (SAMERC Treasurer) visit Whyalla to plan the 2023 competition.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone said SAMERC would have major benefits for the city, with the event to see an influx of emergency response workers and an expected surge in visitors to watch this exciting competition over three days.

“We have proven on many occasions that Whyalla is willing, able and enthusiastic about hosting these sorts of events,” Mayor Stone said.

“This competition will be no different, with plenty of action and entertainment that you just wouldn’t, or couldn’t, see in any other city.

“This will be a unique event that will be a great experience for our community, so we are proud to partner in bringing it to Whyalla.”

There will be seven teams competing in the competition, including one from SIMEC Mining. The teams will be competing for the SAMERC Perpetual Trophy with trophies also awarded to the winners of each event along with Best Team Captain and a SAMERC Chairman’s Award for the team that best demonstrates the values of the competition.
