Update on the return of steel making

17 December 2024

Don’t miss episode four of GFG’s podcast Steel Town, with an update from Chairman Sanjeev Gupta on the return to steel making, the future of the business and his response to recent commentary.

In the latest episode The dedicated Sanjeev says history is certainly not repeating itself as the business navigates the market challenges facing the global steel industry.

“It’s been over 30 years that I’ve been working in steel and I can safely say that this year, is definitely one of the toughest, if not the toughest in my memory. But you know that’s the nature of steel, it is cyclical,” Sanjeev said.

“We should just remember that we’ve been through trouble before and we will get through it. Another point is to remember that my commitment is absolutely rock solid.”

So I would actually maybe take the opportunity to thank and congratulate the good people who are … making this work and I ask all of us to get behind them, they need they need all the encouragement they can get

Sanjeev said the best team is working on the blast furnace restart.

“Restarting a blast furnace is more an art than it is a science.”

“So I would actually maybe take the opportunity to thank and congratulate the good people who are … making this work and I ask all of us to get behind them, they need they need all the encouragement they can get.”

You’ll also meet Noel Goldsworthy in episode three who is looking to overtake the current record of 56.73 years of service.

“It has never been my motivation really… the reason to get out of bed, I like the discipline of coming to work and all those sort of things and I like to think I’m relevant to today’s society…”

Above right: LIBERTY Primary Steel’s Noel Goldsworthy who talks about his long career at the Whyalla steelworks.
