Glimpse into the world of mining and steelmaking
6 November 2024
GFG Alliance has launched a new podcast called Steel Town which aims to give listeners a glimpse into the world of mining and steelmaking in Whyalla.
Whyalla is the birthplace of iron ore and its steelworks have dominated the city’s skyline since it opened in 1941.
GFG hopes Steel Town will give listeners an insight into how steel is made, where it ends up and the highly skilled workers who make it all happen.
In episode one, From a Tuyere to a Taphole, we speak to Chairman Sanjeev Gupta about why he is so passionate about steelmaking and current challenges.
“I’m used to struggle, this town is used to struggle, this steelworks is used to struggle so I hope everybody will keep their faith and persevere, there is a destination…” Sanjeev said.
We also talk to the incredible blast furnace team about the desire and determination to make iron again.
“You work so hard for it … and to see that first liquid flowing out of the taphole is just a marvellous thing to see,” said Blast Furnance Manager William Cunningham.
Community and Stakeholder Coordinator Danielle Bateman talks about her passion for the community and Head of Sales Daniel Coghlan explains the importance of Whyalla steel in projects across the country.
