Jig the key to injury prevention

Continuous improvement > 28th May, 2021

A custom-made turnkey is helping reduce the risk of muscle strain and injury on the mill floor.

To ensure the rolls are ready and fit for purpose, the journal (which connects the mill rolls to the spindle for driving), must be correctly positioned before moving the rolls to the mill floor.

To improve safety and avoid using manual force, the Mill Service Shop Team designed a new turnkey that fits around the journal and can be activated using the overhead crane.

The team built and tested the new ‘semi-automatic’ journal turnkey tool which is now in service.

The new tool allows the team to safely position the journals without the risk of muscle strain and injury due to slips.
