Celebrating our fourth year as major sponsor of the Port Adelaide initiative

9 July 2024

GFG Alliance has proudly continued its major sponsorship of the Multicultural Power Cup hosted by the Port Adelaide Football Club.

GFG has sponsored the two-day event for the past four years. On Friday more than 400 students from schools around South Australia competed in a rotating football competition at Alberton Oval. In-between games, they gained valuable job information at the accompanying Career Expo, which included a GFG Alliance stand, and enjoyed many varied cultural experiences.

The cup program continued at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday where the highest point-winners of the boys and girls football competition played a curtain-raiser final before the Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs AFL clash.

Along with the two winning teams, every student involved in Friday’s competition was given a bird’s eye view of the Multicultural Power Cup final and the AFL match action with tickets to the members area of Adelaide Oval and the opportunity to participate in AFL game day experiences including a lap of honour before the big game.

Another event highlight was the Multicultural Power Cup guernsey-design competition where students were invited to come up with a design for their school to wear in line with the event’s multicultural theme. Maha Ahmed, from Pinnacle College in Golden Grove, produced the winning design with a jumper that featured her Iraqi heritage, including its golden eagle national animal, and the Aboriginal flag.

Maha’s creation was a beautiful design that celebrated the diversity, cultural pride, and multiculturalism spirit of the Multicultural Power Cup. Maha said she was proud to represent not only her culture but other cultures too through her design.

“It’s really nice to be there to be able to represent not only your own culture, but to represent our multiculturalism in Australia,” Maha said.

“I’ve learned what multiculturalism really means.

“Don’t ever be shy about your culture, always be proud of your true background and colours.”

The Multicultural Power Cup program wrapped up after the final on Adelaide Oval with GFG Alliance Head of Government & External Affairs, Mark Scholem making a presentation to the competing teams.

“GFG Alliance is proud to sponsor an event that goes to the heart of our organisation and aligns with our values,” Mark said.

“GFG Alliance is a group of companies that spans the world with operations in Australia, the United Kingdom, America, Europe, India, and Asia.

“We have more than 35,000 employees across these sites so we value the importance of multiculturalism and inclusivity in our workplace, the communities we operate in and the people that make it all happen across our many and varied businesses.”

The Multicultural Power Cup celebrates cultural diversity and expression, promotes inclusion and builds social cohesion by recognising the positive contribution of different cultures within Australia. The annual event is organised by the Power Community Limited not-for-profit charity arm of the Port Adelaide Football Club that offers education programs to promote meaningful social change.
