LIBERTY Primary Steel continues the process of bringing the blast furnace fully back online at the Whyalla steelworks.

During this time there is the potential for emissions from the the top of the blast furnace and equipment operating sirens may also be audible off-site.

These emissions are not unexpected at this stage of a restart process but on occasion weather conditions may result in the emissions not dispersing quickly and may be visible above Whyalla.

LPS Managing Director Tony Swiericzuk thanked the community and visitors to Whyalla for their understanding as the steelworks continues this necessary work for a return to full production.

“We have a dedicated crew working hard to get this vital piece of our steelworks back up and running,” Tony said.

“The emissions are smoke from the furnace and a necessary part of the process of restarting the steelworks and returning the operation to what we do best … producing high quality steel for our customers and the nation.”

Anyone with questions or concerns relating to this matter, or any other aspect of the steelworks’ environmental performance, can direct them to communitysupport@gfgalliance.com or phone 0447 039 358.
