Turning the Whyalla Steelworks from red to profit

12 November 2024

In this episode of Steel Town, host Kelly Fedor speaks with Theuns Victor, GFG Alliance’s senior operational expert, about the ambitious Back to Black initiative with a task force aimed at turning the Whyalla Steelworks around.

Join us as we dive into the critical phases of the plan, from restarting the blast furnace to ramping up production and stabilising the plant’s operations.

“The purpose of the task force is to turn the Whyalla Steelworks around … turn it around from a loss-making business to a profitable business,” Theuns says in the podcast.

Along the way, we hear from key workers in the steelmaking process who share their passion and dedication to making Whyalla’s steel products some of the best in the world.

Operations Manager Nick Laube explains where the Steelmaking plant sits in the operation and the products it produces.

“We sit in the middle, we are after the blast furnace process but before the steel products and rolling mill process,” Nick says.

“Music wire is one (of the products) that I like to spruik, piano wire sand guitar springs along with automotive suspension … even shopping trollies come from our billets.”

Plus, learn about exciting innovations as GFG moves into the solar sector and hear from community leaders on the importance of collaboration and giving back to the region in which we operate.
