Donations sought to reach fundraising target

16 September 2024

A bunch of hardy GFG Alliance employees will be giving up their home comforts and warm beds later this month at the Mission Australia Whyalla Winter Sleepout & Fundraiser 2024.

To help support young people living rough in Whyalla and raise awareness of homelessness issues, the GFG team of Danielle “Dan” Bateman, Chris Smyth, Noel Goldsworthy, Raquel Stankovic and Walter Richards is now more than halfway to its target of $4000 for the annual fundraiser.

For our team members to give up their Friday night to sleep in a tent in the park, is a small way of showing our community that we are real people and we do care about where we live and work

Dan Bateman

As GFG Alliance Whyalla Team coordinator, Dan thanked those that have volunteered their time to “sleep rough” for a night in Ada Ryan Gardens later this month and those that have already donated.

“As GFG Alliance operations (LIBERTY Primary Steel and SIMEC Mining) in Whyalla, we provide support for a range of community groups across a range of categories but this is extending our personal commitment as members of our community as we further support the region, and its people, in which we operate,” Dan said.

“For our team members to give up their Friday night to sleep in a tent in the park, is a small way of showing our community that we are real people and we do care about where we live and work.

“Our team, and the kind donations by individuals in our organisation, has been a big help to ensure the Whyalla event well exceeds its $10,000 target across the teams that are taking part.”

With that target now achieved, the GFG Alliance Whyalla team has raced to second place on the fundraising leader board that consists of nine other wonderful Whyalla organisations and community groups taking part in the sleepout.

“But more donations are needed to support our brave campers and push that total and our team up even further,” Dan said.

To donate to the GFG Alliance Whyalla Team go to Mission Australia – GFG Alliance Whyalla or simply scan the QR code.

The money raised in Whyalla will go directly to local youth in need with more than 2500 people currently sleeping rough in the region.

The Whyalla Winter Sleepout & Fundraiser 2024 is being held in the secure Court Area of Ada Ryan Gardens from 6.30pm on Friday 20 September until 8.30am on Saturday. There will be local speakers on the night and cooked breakfast in the morning.
