Christmas event returns to Whyalla

The Whyalla Christmas pageant is back and GFG Alliance is back on board as a supporter.

With a long history in the city, the annual festive event was named the Apex GFG Whyalla Christmas Pageant for the first time in 2017 and was a huge hit until Covid forced it online in 2020 and 2021. With Covid restrictions now relaxed, the Whyalla Apex Club organisers will have the pageant back on the streets of Whyalla on Saturday 26 November with the help of GFG Alliance’s support.

LIBERTY Primary Steel Community and Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Denise Sharp said the Whyalla operations of GFG Alliance (LIBERTY Primary Steel and SIMEC Mining) were rapt to be back involved in the pageant with employees and their families taking part once again.

“We have taken the GFG Alliance train float, that was kindly constructed by Pete Santucci from the Whyalla Council, out of the shed to give it a new coat of paint and some Christmas decorations,” Denise said.

“As a key employer and supporter of the community in Whyalla, we are very proud to be continuing this support and involvement in our annual pageant.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT: GFG Alliance employees and family members take part in the 2019 pageant.

“It is one of the highlights of the year for us as a company and for our employees and families as they join the pageant, hand some treats to the kids and share the festive spirit with the community.”

Damien Trenwith, from the Whyalla Apex Club, said he was thrilled to bring the pageant and after-pageant fair back to the Whyalla city streets and Ada Ryan Gardens.

“We are thankful for the efforts of the community that were involved in the digital pageant over the past two years,” Damien said.

“Now we are really looking forward to Whyalla getting behind the traditional pageant we all know and love with the continued support of the community and local operations like GFG Alliance.”

Kicking off with the traditional motor bike toy run just before the 5pm official start, the parade will travel from the top of Forsyth Street to Patterson Street, Jamieson Street and Cudmore Terrace before finishing at Ada Ryan Gardens with the after-pageant fair. The pageant is sponsored by GFG Alliance, the City of Whyalla, APEX and SCA.
